The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is an independent sovereign state, a constitutional monarchy which is hereditary in the house of Nassau. The present ruler, the Grand Duke Jean, succeeded to the throne in November 1964. The legislative power rests with a Parliament or Chamber of Deputies, elected by men and women over 18 all of whom in Luxembourg have the right to vote.
A respected member of the European Union, a role model of international finance and a benchmark in comparisons of quality of life, Luxembourg enjoys a prosperity that nations many times larger aspire toward and envy. The economic structure of the Grand Duchy rests on iron and steel industry and on many light industries. Agriculture and vinegrowing also are very important.
Geographically the Grand Duchy is divided into 2 sections: in the North the uplands of the Ardennes, a hilly and scenically beautiful region, in the South the Good Land, mainly rolling farmlands and woods bordered on the East by the lovely grapegrowing Valley of the Moselle.
The population is bilingual, or even trilingual. Luxembourgeois is the national language. French and German are spoken by everyone, and many people speak English.
